Indonesia Charts Bold Path for a Green Economy at the PAGE Steering Committee

Brussels-Microsoft Teams, 17 September 2025 - When the global PAGE family gathered virtually in Brussels for the 16th PAGE Steering Committee Meeting on 17 September 2025, Indonesia’s voice rang clear and strong. Representing the Government of Indonesia, Mr. Nizhar Marizi, Director of Environmental Affairs at Bappenas, shared the country’s journey, achievements, and vision for the future of a green economy.

Looking Back: Seeds of Transformation

Since joining PAGE in 2018, Indonesia has worked tirelessly to weave green economy principles into its national plans. Mr. Marizi recalled how PAGE support helped plant the seeds of transformation:
•    A National Circular Economy Roadmap and Action Plan with internationally recognized indicators.
•    Food loss and waste strategies that moved from studies to real pilots on the ground.
•    Fresh models for waste-to-energy and circular practices in industries.
•    Support for industrial decarbonization, targeting fertilizer and steel sectors.
•    And perhaps most importantly, a strong focus on people—through the Bappenas Green Academy, university partnerships, and youth-led initiatives like the National Youth Ideathon.

“These efforts didn’t just produce reports or pilots. They changed how Indonesia thinks about—and delivers development.”
Mr. Marizi - Bappenas

Looking Ahead: From Plans to Action

Now, Indonesia is stepping into PAGE Phase II (2025–2027) with even higher ambitions. The focus is clear: moving from planning to action. Among the priorities Mr. Marizi highlighted:
•    Making the Circular Economy Roadmap real, embedding it into climate targets (NDC) and reporting systems (AKSARA).
•    Mobilizing innovative financing and private investment.
•    Preparing the workforce for green jobs through skills mapping and capacity building.
•    Accelerating technology readiness in industries.
•    And bringing green economy into classrooms and universities, ensuring future generations carry the torch.

These priorities, he noted, are not stand-alone projects—they are woven into Indonesia’s Vision 2045 and the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN 2025–2029), where green economy transformation is a central pillar.

Lessons from Indonesia’s Journey

Mr. Marizi also offered reflections that resonated with the Steering Committee:
•    Ownership matters – Government leadership ensures PAGE is not a parallel track but part of Indonesia’s national development fabric.
•    Partnerships create power – Each PAGE agency brings something unique, and together they spark change that no one could achieve alone.
•    Data, finance, and skills – Better indicators, smarter financing, and stronger human capacity are the keys to accelerating transformation.

A Shared Future

As the Steering Committee looked to the future of PAGE beyond 2025, Indonesia’s message stood out: transformation is possible when ambition meets action, and when partnerships are built on trust and shared purpose.

“Indonesia is proud to walk this path with PAGE, funding partners, and fellow countries. Together, we can build an economy that is not only green, but also inclusive, resilient, and circular—an economy that works for people and the planet.”
Mr. Marizi - Bappenas
