Innovative Approach to Food Waste Management in Bogor Regency: The "Ngupahan" App Socialization and Usability Test
Bogor Regency, Indonesia - On July 30, 2024, a significant stride was made in Bogor District, West Java Province, as PAGE Indonesia, in close collaboration with the Regional Food Agency and the Environment and Forestry Agency, introduced the "Ngupahan" mobile application, designed to manage food waste and bolster household food security. This initiative forms part of the National Youth Ideathon, highlighting the importance of community engagement and technological innovation in addressing food waste.
Addressing a Pressing Issue
Indonesia, ranking second globally in food waste generation after Saudi Arabia, faces significant challenges with food loss and waste (FLW), amounting to 23-48 million tons annually between 2000 and 2019. This alarming figure translates to economic loss, environmental damage, and nutrient depletion. In Bogor District alone, home to over 5.6 million people, the annual food waste production is approximately 428,802 tons, a major contributor to the region's overall waste problem.
The Launch of "Ngupahan"
The "Ngupahan" app aims to transform the management of food surplus and waste at the household level, supporting food security and contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 12.3 (halving food waste by 2030) and SDG 2 (zero hunger). Developed in 2024, the app's version 1.0 features an education corner, food sharing platform, compost bank, and direct sales market. These features enable users to educate themselves about food waste, share surplus food, manage waste profitably, and buy or sell food at consumer-friendly prices.
Socialization and Usability Testing
The socialization event on July 30th in Gunung Putri Village was a key milestone, attended by over 30 local stakeholders, including community members, local authorities, and practitioners. The event began with introductory remarks from local leaders, followed by detailed presentations on food loss and waste management by Ms. Made Dwi Rani from UNDP-UNPAGE and presentation about Ngupahan app by the expert team lead by Ms. Dwi Aryanti Nur’Utami. The discussions emphasized the app's potential to integrate and sustain food systems within the community.
The usability testing, conducted in two phases—Education Corner and Food Sharing—allowed participants to interact with the app and provide valuable feedback. This hands-on approach ensured that the app meets user needs and capabilities, laying the groundwork for its successful implementation.
Moving Forward
The next steps involve continuous support from PAGE Indonesia to refine and enhance the "Ngupahan" app, with the official launch slated for October 2024. This initiative not only addresses the immediate food waste challenges in Bogor but also sets a precedent for sustainable food management practices across Indonesia.
By leveraging technology and fostering community participation, the "Ngupahan" app represents a forward-thinking solution to one of Indonesia's critical environmental and economic issues, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future.
